The 5th Council Meeting of SSIJRI was held in Singapore

On 1 April 2019, the 5th Council Meeting of Sino-Singapore International Joint Research Institute (SSIJRI) was held in Singapore. The meeting, which was the first time to be held in Singapore, not only made decisions on SSIJRI critical issues, but also strengthened the cooperation links among the four parties. Members of the Council, Dr Wu Yechun, Vice President of South China University of Technology, Prof Lam Khin Yong, Vice President (Research) of Nanyang Technological University Singapore (NTU Singapore), Mr Xu Hui, Vice Director of Sino-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City Development and Construction Office and Mr Ang Boon Peng, Vice President (Strategic Collaboration) of Sino-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City Investment and Development Company attended the meeting. Mr Sun Xuewei, Vice Director of Guangzhou Development District Administrative Committee attended and addressed the meeting. Prof Yu Long, the Executive Director of SSIJRI, together with Vice Director Prof Chan Siew Hwa and other members from SSIJRI management team and the four council parties also took part in the meeting.
 
 
 
Prof Lam Khin Yong granted warm welcome to all the participants. And Mr Sun Xuewei addressed the meeting. He said that Guangzhou Development District highly values the cooperation between China and Singapore. China is setting up an innovation-driven modern economic system. The development of Guangdong- Hong Kong- Macao Greater Bay Area and Belt and Road Initiative are also strengthening the cooperation in innovation and technology. SSIJRI is a landmark within this background. As an institute established under the witnesses of the heads of China and Singapore, Government will provide favorable policies to ensure the sustainable and smooth growth of SSIJRI. And SSIJRI’s objective is to become a high-level, sustainable and innovative research institute.
 
 
 
 
 
In the meeting, The Council reviewed and approved the annual work report and financial report of 2018 and made decisions on important issues concerning future development. The Council also appraised the work and achievements of SSIJRI and put forward new requirements for the works of next stage and the improvement of the medium-and-long term development plan. And it was emphasized that SSIJRI shall grasp any historic opportunities to make innovation in its operational mechanism, and contribute to the scientific and technological cooperation between China and Singapore.
 
 
 
 
 
On 3 April, SSIJRI organized a communication session with the project teams from NTU Singapore to hear their feedback and discuss how to improve and better support the teams.
 
 
 
 
During the business trip in Singapore, to learn from research cooperation and operational model of Singapore’s research organizations, management team of SSIJRI, led by Dr Wu Yechun, the Co-Chair of the Council, visitedEnergy Research Institute of NTU Singapore (ERIAN), The Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (SIMTech) and  Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE)of Agency for Science, Technology and Research(A*STAR), One North and National Research Foundation(NRF).
